Customer FAQ
Recently Bell Aliant completed its purchase of Ontera from the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC). Bell Aliant operates in select Ontario communities under the Bell brand as well as KMTS, DMTS, NorthernTel.
Please refer to the FAQ to address frequently asked questions.
Will I still pay my bill the same way?
Yes. Any changes required for bill payments will be reflected on your bill and communicated to you well in advance.
Will I need to change phone numbers, services, or anything else about my account?
No. Customers will keep their same telephone number and email address and the same features, long distance services, wireless and Internet services. Any changes will be communicated well in advance.
If I get an Ontera and a Bell bill today, will I get one bill for all services after the merger?
No. There are no plans at this time to merge the services into one bill. Any changes to bills will be communicated to you well in advance.
What new products will you offer?
We will build on the solid foundation Ontera has and look at what additional products and services we can bring to the table down the road.
Will product prices go up as a result of this transaction?
We have no immediate plans for rate increases. Any future price changes would reflect changing regulatory and competitive environments, and changing product and service mix. Should any changes be required in the future, they will be communicated well in advance.
If I have a question about my recent Ontera bill, or want to change my Ontera services, who do I call?
In addition to information on our website, you call the same numbers as you do today. Any future changes to your sales or customer care contacts will be communicated to you well in advance. The best way to reach Ontera is in the following ways:

Protecting Yourself from “Phishing” and Email Scams
You may have experienced or read about recent incidents of unsolicited email messages masquerading as legitimate enterprises that attempt to trick recipients into disclosing personal and financial information. Phishing or “brand spoofing” is the act of sending an e-mail to a user falsely claiming to be a legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into disclosing private information. Government, financial institutions and online auctions or pay services are common targets of brand spoofing.
At no time will Ontera request personal or financial information by sending out unsolicited emails. You should never send personal confidential information (usernames and passwords) by email as it is not a secure method of contact.
How The Phishing Scams Work:
A common email scam uses unsolicited email to trick consumers into disclosing confidential personal information. The deceptive email suggests clicking on a link or attachment for any one of the following reasons:
- Change / update personal information
- Possible suspension of service or accounts
- Contests
- After clicking on an attachment or link from the unsolicited email, the user is taken to a bogus site that requests confidential personal information, which could include:
- Usernames
- Passwords
- Personal Identification Numbers (PINs)
- Credit card numbers
- Other personal or private Information
How to Identify the Scams:
There are some similarities that can help you identify the scams:
- They are designed to mimic the look and feel of a legitimate website
- They are most commonly sent out through unsolicited emails, containing links or attachments
- The Web address will often have a numeric address or IP address. The address may also include the word, phrase or text ‘Ontera’ to make it appear authentic.
Below is an example of what a “phishing” email might look like:

Protecting Yourself from PBX/Voicemail Hacking
In response to reports about telephone equipment (PBX) hacking throughout the industry, here are some tips to avoid telephone hacking:
- Regularly change your voicemail PINs and do not use default PINs such as 1234.
- Disable any call forwarding or outbound call ability from your voicemail ports.
- Cancel any unused voicemail boxes.
- Restrict the ‘after hours’ outgoing call access.
